VFL Season '87: A Look Back - VFL/AFL

1987 was an eventful season for the now national Victorian Football League. Two new teams in the West Coast Eagles and Brisbane Bears had made the State Competition into an almost national one waiting for South Australia to join in the coming years.

It was also an eventful year for the broadcast rights as Broadcom would win the rights off of Channel 7 in an ugly dispute that saw the ABC broadcast games into Victoria, Channel 0 broadcast games in Brisbane, Channel 7 broadcasting games in Perth, a mix of ABC and SBS broadcasting games in Sydney and Sportsplay Television Services broadcasting live into Hotels and Clubs across Australia. It was quite a mess.

Because of this mess, We would not get a traditional That Was The Season That Was special but unlike today where the broadcasters can't be arsed to do a Season Review, Broadcom gave it a shot and did their own take on a Season Review in VFL Season '87: A Look Back!

Hosted by Ken Hose and Narrated by the great Dennis Cometti, VFL Season '87: A Look Back gives an 80 minute look at the eventful season and I'll be dammed if they don't give it a good crack. Fans of the TWTSTW series would be proud.

In a weird twist of fate 7 years later, Australian Football Video would have their own crack at the 1987 VFL Season with an official That Was The Season That Was special for the eventful season, Hosted by the late Stephen Phillips. It would give Season 1987, Not 1 but 2 season reviews. A weird distinction but a special one I think you'll agree.

We also have that video in our archives and we will be sure to present it to you at a later date but for now, Enjoy VFL Season '87: A Look Back!
