STORYLINE:
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on Saturday launched its election campaign by announcing that it would be fielding candidates from right across Pakistan for the first time.
Thousands of supporters gathered near their party headquarters in central Karachi for a party rally.
The crowd cheered, waved party flags and photos of founder and leader Altaf Hussain, as well as chanting slogans.
The candidates will contest National Assembly seats as well as four provincial assemblies.
"Out of the 42 National Assembly seats MQM has placed 221 candidates for the National Assembly from all over Pakistan, and 450 provincial Assembly candidates (from) all over Pakistan," said senior MQM leader and a former National Assembly member Haider Abbas Rizvi
As election fever grips Pakistan, Karachi is tense as supporters from rival political parties have clashed, but no major violence has been reported.
Hussain, addressing the gathering in Karachi on the telephone, asked the Taliban to lay down arms and engage in dialogue.
