The Bronze Serpent Explained: Why Jesus Compared Himself to a Snake

Of all the comparisons Jesus could have made, one of them seems almost impossible to understand.

Why did Jesus compare Himself to a serpent?

The image appears in John 3, in the middle of His conversation with Nicodemus:

“As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up.”

For many readers, the comparison feels shocking.

After all, throughout the Bible, the serpent is often associated with deception, rebellion, and the fall of humanity.

So why this image?

The answer begins in Numbers 21.

After Israel rebelled in the wilderness, venomous serpents spread through the camp. Yet God instructed Moses to create a bronze serpent and lift it upon a pole. Those who looked upon it in faith were healed and lived.

The story is strange.

But it reveals a deeper biblical pattern.

The instrument associated with judgment became the means through which healing was offered. The very symbol of the curse was lifted up so that those facing death might receive life.

This is what makes Jesus’ words so extraordinary.

The cross follows the same pattern.

What appeared to be defeat became victory.

What appeared to be shame became glory.

What appeared to be death became life.

By connecting Himself to the bronze serpent, Jesus was pointing toward a profound truth at the heart of the Gospel: healing comes through the One who bears what humanity could not overcome on its own.
