Mattheus was born in 1975 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. At the age of 19 he entered the Maritime Officers course at the Maritime Academy in Rotterdam. As a Maritime Officer, he sailed as part of his training on the M/S Anastasis of Mercy Ships. During this time, he travelled to different countries, and he had a powerful encounter with the Lord during a Mercy Ships mission outreach in Madagascar.
