1890s (circa) - M.D. - Paris - Les Images Vivantes - 48 (knife grinder)

Les Images Vivantes 48 depicts only 11 images of a man working with a grinding machine. M.D.'s zoetrope drums had 12 or 15 viewing slits, so the the man and the machine do not stay in place as would logically be expected from the depicted scene. Instead, the moving machine's movement at first glance suggests a moving bike or car (going backward or forward, depending on the direction in which the drum rotates).
Possibly the animator just ended up with too little space to draw a twelfth picture; even the eleventh picture is cut off a bit (in a weird angled way, while at least on the printed result on paper there is enough space for a complete figure). If the image would not move around spatially, as if viewed through eleven slits, the movement in the animation would be very limited: the man moves the pedal up and down a bit with his foot and moves a small object over the grinding wheel. It is unclear whether this was animated before or after the cinématographe was introduced and some tracking shots were made from trains, but it is very unlikely that the animator intended to create a similar effect. Intentional or not: the "tracking" along what now appears like an endless line of men and machines makes the animation a bit less boring.
