Bach "Air on the G string," performed on clarinet and piano by Joe and Nina Fried

August Wilhelmj (1845-1908) produced this famous arrangement of the second movement ("Air") of J.S. Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major. While the original orchestral suite was written for several violins and other instruments, Wiljelmj's arrangement was written for a solo violin with a very light accompaniment. In addition, the arranger lowered the key from D major to C major to enable the soloist to play the entire composition on a single string. On the score Wilhelmj wrote the words by which the air is now known: "On the G string."

This recording was made on October 14, 2016 in a performance by Joseph Fried (clarinet) and Nina Fried (piano) for the Cleveland Musical Art Society. Nina is playing the clavier part and Joe is playing the solo violin part - up one octave and transposed for Bb clarinet. The music, which is in the public domain, was obtained from the International Music Score Library Project (IMSLP).
