Software Testing Expert Highly Recommends Software Testing Assessments
I have been on both sides of a software testing assessment. Early in my career I thought they were unnecessary. I figured I already knew what needed to be fixed so why bring in someone else to tell me. I was wrong. Over time I became a strong believer in them and in this video I explain why, especially when an independent third party is doing the work.
A software testing assessment is a structured evaluation of where your QA organization actually stands. Not where you think it stands. Where it actually stands. That includes your maturity level across areas like test automation, performance testing, environment management, code deployment processes, and the overall quality stage gates your team follows from requirements review through defect capture. Most organizations do not need to reach TMMi level five. Unless you are sending rockets to the moon or building systems where human life is on the line, a level three is usually sufficient and realistic for most teams.
In this video I walk through how I personally conduct assessments. I interview people inside the QA organization and outside of it. Business stakeholders, developers, leadership. I ask what is working well, what needs to improve, and one question I have recently started asking that consistently produces the most revealing answers. I talk about how I compile weeks of interview data into a detailed report and executive presentation, and how I have started leveraging AI to make that process significantly faster.
But the real value is what comes after the assessment. The improvement roadmap. Taking those findings and building a 12-month or three-year plan with checkpoints along the way so the organization can measure how far it has come. And I share the one reason I believe an outside entity doing the assessment matters more than doing it internally. It comes down to credibility and eliminating the biases that are almost impossible to avoid when you are evaluating your own team.
If you are a QA leader thinking about conducting an assessment or if your organization is considering bringing someone in to evaluate your testing practice, this video gives you the full picture of what that process looks like and why it is worth doing.
