AOL: What Went Wrong

For a few short but gloriously triumphant years, America Online was the most recognised brand on the internet. Those ‘free trial’ CDs which appeared in every magazine, in every letterbox, on every street corner and shop counter, and very probably in every packet of teabags, played a major part in getting AOL into the homes of 34 million subscribers at its peak in 2001.

Fast-forward just a few years, throw in the most disastrous merger of all time with Time Warner, and AOL has quickly become little more than a footnote in history.

So just how on Earth was that allowed to happen?
