Ravel's stunning ONDINE (5 tips on how to perform it plus performance!) Duane Hulbert, pianist

Maurice Ravel's Ondine is the first movement from Gaspard de la Nuit, a set of pieces written in 1908. The three works in the set are among the most difficult in the piano repertoire.
In this video, pianist Duane Hulbert gives 5 tips on how to tackle this beast of a piece...and give it the beauty it deserves. Non-pianists will also gain insights into what a pianist must accomplish to master this Impressionistic gem. A full performance of Ondine begins at 7:10.
The shimmering repeated note technique in Ondine is a brilliant example of Impressionism at its height. It's also a rare example of a piece written in C-sharp major, that is, every note in the scale is a sharp! This brilliant work features sweeping arpeggios, glissandos on both white and black keys and hauntingly beautiful melodies surrounded by thousands of notes (more than 10,000 notes in six and a half minutes of music!)
In composing Gaspard de la Nuit, it was said that Ravel wanted to write a piece more difficult than Balakirev's Islamey Fantasy, written in 1875. Ravel wrote two impressive glissandos in the piece, one on the white keys (difficult) and another on the black keys (even more difficult and a painful experience for any pianist's cuticles!)
