The great state of Wisconsin recently announced that they have found $5.97 million in erroneous unemployment payments.

These 7,843 unemployment claims were: “filed fraudulently due to identity theft” according to the Department of Workforce Development (DWD)

DWD stated: “fraudsters have been trying to take advantage of the high number of unemployment claims throughout the pandemic through a variety of schemes."

A state resident responded to the state’s fraudulent payments: “It's millions of dollars wasted that could be used for helping someone who really deserves it.”

I couldn’t agree more, and hope that Wisconsin can recover these funds and help actual unemployed citizens get their much needed benefits.

Meanwhile, Bank of America, the 2nd largest bank in the US, could be partially to blame for the mishandling of millions of dollars in unemployment funds across the great state of California.

We talked earlier about California’s millions of backlogged unemployment claims, but now that those have been mostly handled, a new issue is blocking citizens from receiving their funds.

Upwards of 350,000 unemployment claims are currently frozen or impacted, with the state blaming Bank of America for the hold-up, due to potential fraud.

With the contract in place since 2010 for California unemployment claims to be disbursed on BofA debit cards, some financial experts are calling on the state to end their deal with the big bank.

San Francisco Assemblymember David Chiu stated: “They’re playing the blame game. Someone needs to take responsibility for this. I think we’re going to have to revisit that contract if BofA can’t provide the services it promised.”

I sure hope that Bank of America can get their act together, because with a renewal contract next July, the people that can’t access their unemployment funds aren’t likely to approve your actions in the future.

Finally, Governor Andrew Cuomo, from the great state of New York, pleaded with Congress yesterday to pass more stimulus for unemployed Americans.

He explained in a letter: "Congress moved decisively this spring to address the economic impacts of the pandemic and should once again take action before the calendar year ends to bring badly needed support to millions of struggling Americans."

Cuomo also stated: “As we enter the holiday season, and as states once again enact stronger measures, critical federal unemployment benefits are about to expire. Inaction from Washington is putting millions of Americans' financial security at risk."

I couldn’t agree more, and I hope that Congress can hear our cries for more stimulus funds, especially in the form of direct payments and extended enhanced unemployment benefits.

If you still haven’t applied for unemployment assistance, start the week off right and apply today.

Check out your state’s PUA or UI website, upload your supporting documents and job history, and explain that you’re currently out of work due to that thing out there.
