Hey Guys,
Today we are replacing the scratched and sun-damaged acrylic dome on this security camera.
[Montage]
The camera we are repairing today is a Dahua 12mp fisheye camera. I use it as a live sky-camera to track weather, meteors, northern lights, or anything interesting in the sky. It’s still a work in progress, but to check out the latest sequence of images from this camera, go to ABSkyView.com and follow the links for the live view.
This camera has been outside for 6 years. I reviewed it back in 2019 and it has done very well, with the exception of the dome covering the lens. Birds land on the camera daily and it’s exposed to all types of weather. The sun’s UV has even yellowed the dome. Just check out the color and the texture of this one smooth lens cover. I ordered a new dome on Amazon and it cost about $20 US.
Let’s fast-forward here and get this camera opened up. Ok cool. So, the lens looks like it’s in perfect shape, good to see. Wow, check out all the scratches on the dome cover. That’s crazy. And after removing a few more screws, we have the weather sealing o-ring attached to the dome cover itself. Let’s pop that off and I’ll clean it up later.
Here we’ll drop in the new dome cover and reassemble the camera, pretty straight forward.
And here is a side-by-side comparison of the new and old lens cover. Pretty incredible. We’ll install it by following the steps in reverse. I’d recommend replacing the silica gels packs at this point too. This will help prevent the camera lens from fogging up on these cool mornings. These are just taped in there. Ok, everything is tightened up and ready to go.
Here is another side-by-side comparison. Now’s let’s head outside and get this re-installed, so we can start recording the sky again and get our website back up and running.
Ok, it’s all connected and let’s check out some footage.
I placed the old dome on the camera to show how the footage used to look. Pretty terrible. Now with the new dome, the image speaks for itself; much better and crisp. And if you look closely, there is a little swarn of flies, which the camera couldn’t pick up due to the damage on the original lens cover. And here is some day-night time-lapse. I couldn’t be happier; it’s like a brand-new camera.
Already guys, links for everything like the replacement dome cover and the silica gels packs can be found description. If you found this video helpful, give it a thumbs up and please subscribe so you don’t miss out on any future home tech DIY projects, you can do yourself. Thanks for watching.
