Leadville, CO - Highest City in the US with the Best Pizza on the Planet! | Newstates in the States

High up in Leadville, Doc Holliday shot his last man, the Unsinkable Molly Brown weighed anchor and married, and did we mention the absolutely incredible pizza? Step back in time with us and let's explore the unique mountain city of Leadville, Colorado.

At over 10,000 feet, Leadville's elevation made for some chilly nights in the RV! It dipped into the 30's in late August, but we braved the cold to explore this famous city located about two hours outside of Denver.

Continuing our streak of free camping and not paying for a campsite since early July, we boondocked just 15 minutes outside of town on County Road 48 near Turquoise Lake. (GPS Coordinates: 39.244466,-106.375017)

Formerly known as the most lawless town in the west, Leadville has a colorful past. A former mining town, it drew the likes of outlaws here. Most notably, Doc Holliday of Tombstone fame, moved here not long after the infamous gunfight at the O.K. Corral. He used to gamble and drink in the Silver Dollar Saloon, located right in town. So of course, we had to check it out and walk in the footsteps of such a famous outlaw. Stepping through the doors of this historic saloon, the fourth oldest in Colorado, is like stepping back in time. The windbreak, front bar, back bar and saloon doors are all original pieces. The Unsinkable Molly Brown also lived in Leadville and married in the town church. Jimmy Buffet wrote one of his famous songs in a booth at the saloon, Incommunicado, which mentions the town of Leadville. Visiting this historic bar was definitely a highlight of our trip here!

We also had quite possibly the best pizza on the planet! High Mountain Pies is a small pizza joint with big flavor! The topping combinations are unique, the service was excellent and they even have an outdoor patio area perfect for social distancing. If you've been along for the journey, you know how much we love pizza. High Mountain Pies was so incredible, we ate here twice in two days!

We finished off our time in this cute city by hiking the Timberline Lake Trail just past Turquoise Lake. It's a 5.5 mile out and back trail where you're rewarded with beautiful views of a hidden lake. Best of all, our three pups came along with us on this dog friendly trail. It was a little tough since we were hiking at over 10,000 feet of elevation, but definitely worth it. The weather here was wild for the end of August and freezing temperatures and hail made us hightail it back to car.
