Talkin' Jazz: The Virtual Sessions (Cyrille Aimee)

Welcome to Talkin’ Jazz: The Virtual Sessions. I’m Fred Kasten, host of the long-running Talkin’ Jazz interview series, which is a collaboration between the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park and the New Orleans Jazz Museum. That monthly series spotlights significant jazz artists in New Orleans through 45 minute interviews in front of a live audience at the Jazz Museum’s Performing Arts Center; it’s on Covid-19 hiatus right now, but Talkin’ Jazz: The Virtual Sessions is stepping up with a weekly set of fresh interviews with top Crescent City jazz musicians.

Our next Talkin’ Jazz: The Virtual Sessions spotlighted artist is critically acclaimed, Grammy-nominated vocalist Cyrille Aimee. A native of Samois-sur-Seine, France and current resident of New Orleans - Aimee got engaged in music, first on guitar and then vocals, through a family of gypsy musicians who came to Samois-sur-Seine each year for the town’s long-running Django Reinhardt festival. She went on to earn a degree in music from SUNY Purchase in New York – win the 2007 Montreux Jazz Festival Competition and the inaugural Sarah Vaughn International Jazz Competition in 2012 – then garner a Grammy nomination for her 2019 recording Move On: A Sondheim Adventure. We caught up with Cyrille at her home in New Orleans.
