In this episode we pull anchor for the last time in the Bay area and head out of the Golden Gate Bridge to start our circumnavigation around the world. we reminisce on the past year and after 6 hours we make it to our first stop at Half Moon Bay.

Who are we?
We are Andrew and Jonah. Our dogs are Max (German Shepard) and Lana (Husky). We have been living on our 1974 Ed Horstman Tristar 36 for almost a year now. We have spent this time working on it and living aboard it at anchor this entire time. We plan to head south this September and sail the Sea of Cortez to start our long circumnavigation around the planet.

All solar powered electric with Tesla batteries for power storage. We have 930 watts of solar on our hard bimini. We cook with an electric induction cooktop and electric oven. We have a 90 L fridge freezer. enough space for a month of food. The freezer is great for the dogs since they eat raw chicken. We also have a washer and dryer and an air conditioner aboard incase the dogs get too hot. As of now we move the sailboat with 2 130 lb thrust trolling motors with average speed of 3 knots when both are in half throttle which uses about 1800 watts an hour. Our 2 Tesla model s batteries hold around 10,000 watts of power and soon we will be getting 2 more for a total of about 20,000 watts of 24 volt power storage. This may be overkill but we want to take into account cloudy days. We also have a 2000 watt generator as a backup incase we need to become a hybrid boat when there isn't enough sun or we need a quick charge for an emergency. Other electric applicances powered by solar: TV, sound system, vhf, ham radios, vacuum (needed for dogs), water pump for sink, shower, rice cooker, hair straightener, dinghy battery, power tools, lights.

Kraken was finished being built near San Francisco in 1974 by Steve Thornton. The design Horstman used for his Tristars came from a more aeronautical approach with Boeing. His designs were thought of as the dreadnoughts of trimarans. These trimarans became well known for sea worthiness, lots of space above and below, and the highest carrying capacity while keeping speed of all the trimaran designs at the time. These sailboats are very rare. You wont see these for sale like many other trimarans such as the Norman Cross or Searunner because the people who built these boats, didn't want to get rid of them. His designs are by far the most beautiful looking trimarans (in our opinon). The deck is all flush and rounded which also helps with water flow on deck (important out in sea). The interior is designed beautifully as well. It looks more like a studio apartment inside. It feels very open. The main salon itself is 20 ft wide from window to window which for a 36 ft sailboat feels amazing. The water tanks are fiberglassed in the amas (outer hulls) to help with ballast and the low profile design of the sailboat makes it one of the most difficult trimarans to capsize. The 36 ft Tristars are only 8000 lbs (4 tons) dry. They can easily carry over 2000 lbs without affecting its speed significantly.
