Before S7E10 gave us Day Breaker, Solar Flare was the fandom's name for Celestia's ultimate form. It's an old idea going back to S1, to mirror Luna's Nightmare Moon transformation. It's only been seen briefly in two secondary-canon media: IDW comic issue #20 and the Diary of the Two Sisters book. In the first, she got seriously pissed off and burst into flames as she charged into battle and looked similar to fan portrayals (2:04). In the second, she yelled in the booming voice of legion which caused a prideful dragon to flee in terror and abandon his lair (portrayed by a fan at 0:47). The second had Faust as a consultant, so I'll take it.

I'm not an artist, but I think a cool visual would be to have the crown and her accouterments melt off her body. The crown could melt down her face and neck and drip liquid gold onto the floor. I feel like I've maybe seen something like that in a movie or anime somewhere before, not sure.

Another fan idea is that while in the state she loses the sense of her self, and she's afraid she may fall so low she would never come back. This can be another reason why she was able to forgive Luna so easily. It's also used a lot for evil versions of Celestia, but not universally.

Another old idea is that she represses her power because of its destructive potential and her inability to control it, despite centuries of study and meditation, and her fear or regret from hurting others – similar to Superman's world of cardboard speech, or the Hulk, Iron Giant, early Avatar Aang, etc.

Regardless, given everything presented of the world, I think it's fair to say Cel and Luna had to do some serious warlording back in the day. Equestria is crazy enough after 1000 years of civilization and imperial order. It's must've been pure crazy town back then, especially after Discord, Sombra, Tirek, etc. showed up, not to mention the squabbling tribes or the usual politics of running a continent spanning empire. The sisters had their work cut out of them.

TL;DR Where's my Celestia episodes, Hasbro. Do a Cel/Luna buddy cop episode, something.
