Amerigo Vespucci - The Great Navigators Series

Amerigo Vespucci was an Italian explorer whose journeys changed the way the world understood geography. Born in Florence in 1454, Vespucci worked as a navigator and merchant before joining expeditions to the New World at the turn of the 16th century. During his voyages along the coast of South America, Vespucci made a groundbreaking realization: the lands discovered by Columbus were not part of Asia, as many believed. Instead, they were part of an entirely new continent. His letters describing these discoveries spread quickly across Europe and reshaped global maps. Because of his insight, a German cartographer named Martin Waldseemüller labeled the new continent “America”, using the Latin form of his name, Americus. Over time, the name stuck. Today, Amerigo Vespucci is remembered as the man who helped the world understand the true size and shape of the planet — and whose name became part of two continents.
