In the lead up to the next chapter of the Godzilla franchise, I’m pretty sure you still don’t know
everything you need to know about our favorite, radioactive Kaiju. So, we here at Top 5 Best figured
we’d get you up to date with the goings on by giving you 25 fascinating facts about Godzilla. We have a
lot of ground to cover so let’s begin shall we?

20. We all assumed that since Godzilla’s form is predominantly reptilian, he originated from some sort of
reptilian animal. If the much maligned 1998 film is to be our basis, he was originally a marine iguana.
However, his origin was never reptilian, at least, when it comes to his name. His name is actually an
amalgamation of “gorira”, the Japanese word for gorilla, and “kujira”, the Japanese word for whale.

19. Godzilla movies, especially the Japanese ones, are campy at best. But behind all the overt campiness,
there is actually a deep commentary, particularly on the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which
incidentally happened nine years before the first movie was released.
In the original 1954 movie, Godzilla was a clear metaphor for the atomic bomb. The design of his skin
was intentionally done to mimic the keloid scar tissue worn by many Hiroshima and Nagasaki survivors,
and a famous scene in the movie depicting Godzilla attacking a fishing boat was inspired by r3eal events
which happened 8 months before the movie’s release. A tuna fishing boat drifted into fallout from an
American atomic bomb test, subjecting the crew to severe radiation poisoning.

18. Godzilla is undoubtedly one of the most iconic movie monsters of all time, thanks in part to his
equally iconic roar. Prior to the development of modern digital sound effects, filmmakers had to think of
a way to give the giant monster a voice, they did so by rubbing a pine tar covered leather glove up and
down the strings of a double bass.

17. Sticking to his origins, did you know that the Godzilla that we know and love today could have
looked a lot, lot different? The original concept was that for godzilla to look more like a giant octopus.
Eventually, Tomoyuki Tanaka, the movies producer, decided to go for the dinosaur like design instead. If
they stuck with the original design, do you think godzilla would still be the icon that he is now?
Comment down below please.

16. If you would watch all the early godzilla movies, you’d notice that they were made on a tight budget.
Well, they were on a tight budget and a whole lot of penny pinching had to be done in order to finish
the movies.

Special effects director Eiji Tsuburaya originally wanted to use stop motion animation, the same
technology used for the original King Kong movie, but found the method too expensive. So they opted
to put a man in a rubber suit instead.
The original godzilla suit itself weighed 220 pounds and was impossible to move in. This forced the
studio to make a lighter, more mobile suit. But, new suit notwithstanding, it was still hellishly hot in
there. So hot in fact that that the crew had to drain up to a cup of actor Haruo Najakima’s sweat from
the suit after every take.

15. Speaking of the suit, in 1992, one of the monster’s costumes (worth a whopping $39,000) was stolen
from a Toho garage, only to be found washed up on the shores of Lake Okutama which was near Tokyo.
It inadvertently terrified a woman who was out for a stroll.

14. At the time the first movie was released, it was the most expensive Japanese movie ever made,
that’s despite of the tight budget. However, it was a smash it, allowing the studio to make a ton of
sequels. How many godzilla movies have been made I hear you ask. Not counting the one about to be
released this year, there have been 35 movies in all, just 3 of them were American made.

13. Godzilla has grown over the times, quite literally. In the original 1954 movie, he was just around 50
meters tall, that’s 164 feet for our American friends. But, by the 2014 film, he already stood at 350 feet
tall. In fact, in order to be a viable opponent, King Kong’s height had to also be increased from his
original height of 24 feet in the original 1933 film.

12. Speaking of viable opponents, two of godzilla’s prominent opponents, Mothra and Rodan, didn’t
appear first in the godzilla franchise. The two had their own movies that were made because of the
success of the original godzilla movie. Rodan came out first with his self-titled movie in 1956 followed by
mothra, again in her own self-titled movie in 1961.
