'What are you dreaming of, Cruiser Aurora, at the hour when the morning rises over the Neva?'
It was from the deck of the Aurora that a single blank shot was fired to signal the storming of the Winter Palace on 25 October 1917 (although this actually took place some hours later). And so this worthy old vessel, built in 1900, became a powerful icon of the Revolution. She returned to naval service in 1922 as a training ship, but she later gave up her guns for the land defence of Leningrad in WWII. She has recently been extensively refitted and is now back in dock in St Petersburg as a museum ship and a powerful witness to history.
