Suzuka City in Mie Prefecture is famous for its Grand Prix racing circuit and GIANT Tonteki pork chops.トンテキ “Tonteki” is a hybrid word that comes from the Japanese 豚 or トン, “ton” (meaning pork) and ステーキ, “ste-ki” (meaning steak), and fans might recognise these thiccc slabs of juicy pork loin from the popular Netflix series Midnight Diner (深夜食堂, "Shinya shokudō"), which has helped to put Mie Prefecture on the Japan foodie tour map.

These pork chops are so good that they are the first regional dish shown in the Japanese foodie drama’s Netflix trailer and Japanese food loving tourists can take a short day trip from Nagoya (the closest major city) to try the garlicky worcestershire sauce covered pork cutlet for themselves. At $15 for 200g of meat, we highly recommend visiting Tonteki Nadai Akanean (トンテキ名代茜庵) in Suzuka for a taste of this authentic Japanese comfort food on a budget.

A trip to Suzuka wouldn't be complete without visiting one of Japan's oldest and most important shrines; Tsubaki Grand Shrine (椿大神社). So after eating mountains of cabbage and more pork than we could handle, we're also taking you on a walking tour of the ancient shrine in the snow.

If you enjoyed our Japanese food & travel tour, don't forget to subscribe and add Mie to your list of places to visit in Japan. And based on our reactions, we wouldn't be surprised if Tonteki becomes part of your top 10 must-try Japanese foods, too!

Tsubaki Taisha (shrine) is a popular wedding location in Japan and it is the Head Shrine for over 2,000 shrines across Japan dedicated to Sarutahiko O-kami, the leader of all earthly gods/deities, as well as for the Tsubaki Grand Shrine in America. Among some of the other deities revered at the shrine is Sarutahiko's wife, Ame no Uzume, who is said to have performed a dance to lure the Sun Goddess and first ruler of Japan, Amaterasu, out of hiding from a cave. Tourists with a JR Pass can make a side trip to this beautiful power spot when traveling from Tokyo to Kyoto, and shouldn't miss it on their pilgrimage to Japan's number one shrine, Ise Jingu.
