Gateshead sex offender back in court after failing to keep police updated of his address

John Dickinson has been hauled into court for failing to comply with the notification requirements of the sex offenders’ register

A sex offender has been hauled into court for failing to keep police updated of his address.

John Dickinson, 64, had not moved home and officers were aware he was living at Maxwell Street, Saltwell, Gateshead.

But under the terms of a crown court sentencing order, he must officially inform them of his place of abode once a year.

Dickinson failed to do so on Saturday, May 29th 2021, leading to his arrest, South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court heard.

He pleaded guilty to failing to comply with the notification requirements of the sex offenders’ register.

The requirements were imposed after he was jailed for 12 months, suspended for two years, in 2017 for attempting to meet a girl aged under 16 following grooming.

The notification requirements of his sentence include an annual requirement to tell police of his home address for ten years.

Prosecutor Lesley Burgess said: “In 2017 the defendant was at the crown court in relation to a sexual offence.

“He was made subject to the notification requirements for ten years.

“One is that the defendant is required to sign annually at a police station and complete a form to supply his address.

“He failed to supply his details. He was asked if he was aware that he knew that he had to give his details annually.

“He said, ‘I forgot all about it. I didn’t realise that I had to do it every year'.”

The court heard Dickinson had twice been imprisoned since his conviction.

Both times it was for failing to comply with the terms of a separate sexual harm prevention order, imposed as part of the same sentencing exercise.

It is different to the sex offenders’ register but in Dickinson’s case, runs alongside it.

He breached it shortly after his conviction and was jailed for 10 weeks, and he received a year's custody in 2019 for a second breach.

Ritchie Rodger, defending, said: “The police are in touch with him, they know where he lives.

Magistrates requested a pre-sentence report and Dickinson will be sentenced at the same court on Tuesday, October 19th 2021.

John Dickinson, of Crawcrook, was snared when he tried to meet a 14-year-old girl for sex

John Dickinson believed he had been talking to a young girl called Amy on social media, but the fake account had been set up by undercover organisation Dark Justice.

Newcastle Crown Court heard how Dickinson contacted an online profile which had been set up on a dating website.

Rachel Masters, prosecuting, told the court : “Amy’s profile showed she was 19-years-old.

“Two days later on June 19 the profile was contacted by the defendant.”

Amy told Dickinson ‘I’m in school’ before telling him she was 14-years-old.

The court heard how he questioned how she could be 14 when you had to be 18 to join the website and she told him she had lied.

Ms Masters said: “The defendant continued the conversation and asked her if she had the facilities to use the Whats App facility.”

Dickinson gave her his mobile number so they could communicate through What’s App and messaged her saying ‘Hi Amy, do you want to try sex’.

He later asked her if she wanted to meet up and what she would want to do if they did.

He told her ‘I’m looking for fun or sex’ to which she replied ‘wow my age not put you off?’

Dickinson replied ‘No but it has to be between us’ and ‘I can go to prison if found out, if you tell anyone I’m in big trouble’

The court heard how Dickinson asked her ‘have you ever seen a man’s penis?’ and offered to send her a picture of his.

He also asked her to send a naked picture of herself so he could see how developed her body was and if she had a bust.

Ms Masters told the court how he said: “You want to meet up for sex is that right? I need to know if your grown up for that.”

She told the court how Dickinson organised to meet Amy at Central Station in Newcastle but later told her ‘can’t come, too many police’.

Dickinson, of Ridings Court, Crawcrook , Tyne and Wear, told Amy to get a bus or taxi to Crawcrook instead.

Dickinson was arrested and claimed he was only going to ‘teach the girl a lesson’.

Ms Masters said: “He agreed we went too far and he should have stopped when it was clear she was only 14-years-old.”

Dickinson previously pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to meet a child
following grooming at magistrates court.

Recorder Nolan sentenced Dickinson to 12 months in prison suspended for two years with a rehabilitation activity requirement.

He also ordered him to sign the sex offenders register and a abide by a sexual harm prevention order for 10 years.
