The Artist Tony DeLap: Preview for Dale Shierholt's film in progress on Tony DeLap
Tony DeLap is a veteran of the West Coast's art scene where he was an early follower of Modernism and the Russian Constructivists, pursuing geometric abstraction as it moved toward minimalism. Though DeLap's work has been aligned with various twentieth century art movements, including Minimalism and Op Art, he seems to defy or elude most solid categories. His early work was a forerunner of upcoming trends in contemporary art with the first critical attention drawn to his hybrid paintings that merged painting and sculpture.
He is an artist whose personal decisions and conception of art lead him, rather than being swayed by the latest fads. For DeLap, discovery is the crux of art; the rewarding part is when something new comes out that you can really feel. Viewers find themselves actively engaged with his work; the process of interacting with his work is part of what makes it so special.
Tony DeLap has dedicated his life to teaching. He taught at California College of Arts and Crafts and was invited to be a founding faculty member of the arts department at the newly founded University of California at Irvine. DeLap has been a mentor to some of California's most notable artists, including Bruce Nauman, James Turrell and John McCracken, who all studied with him during his time at UC Irvine.
Recently, DeLap's work has been featured in the well known Pacific Standard Time exhibition, organized by the Getty Museum. He has an upcoming survey book published by Art Santa Fe Presents and Radius Books (http://radiusbooks.org/6141/tony-delap/) and this new documentary.
We at Charlotte Jackson Fine Art would like to extend a thank you to Dale Shierholt for sharing his video. For more of his work please visit his Vimeo site: http://vimeo.com/schierholt. And make sure to keep an eye out for the rest of his film on Tony DeLap, coming in 2014.
