IJN Mikasa
Mikasa (三笠) was a pre-dreadnought battleship built for the Imperial Japanese Navy in the late 1890s. She was the only ship of her class and was named after Mount Mikasa in Nara, Japan. Built in Britain, Mikasa became one of the most famous warships in Japanese history.
During the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905, Mikasa served as the flagship of Vice Admiral Tōgō Heihachirō, Japan’s most celebrated naval commander. She took part in the Battle of Port Arthur on the second day of the war and later fought in the major naval engagements of the conflict, including the Battle of the Yellow Sea and the decisive Battle of Tsushima. At Tsushima, Mikasa led the Japanese fleet to a historic victory over the Russian Baltic Fleet, establishing Japan as a major naval power.
Only days after the war ended, Mikasa suffered a catastrophic internal explosion when her ammunition magazine accidentally detonated. The explosion caused the ship to sink in harbor, killing many crew members. Mikasa was later salvaged, and her repairs took more than two years to complete.
After returning to service, Mikasa was used mainly as a coastal defense ship during World War I. In the early 1920s, she again saw active duty by supporting Japanese forces during the Siberian Intervention in the Russian Civil War.
In 1922, Mikasa was decommissioned under the terms of the Washington Naval Treaty. Instead of being scrapped, she was preserved as a museum ship at Yokosuka, recognizing her historic importance. However, during the post–World War II Allied occupation of Japan, the ship was badly neglected and fell into poor condition.
In the late 1950s, Mikasa underwent extensive restoration work to save her from further deterioration. Although not fully restored to her original condition, she was preserved as a historical monument. Today, Mikasa is displayed at Mikasa Park in Yokosuka as a museum ship.
Mikasa holds a unique place in naval history. She is the last surviving pre-dreadnought battleship in the world, the only surviving non-American battleship, and also the last surviving British-built battleship, making her one of the most important preserved warships anywhere.
