Today, Christian sits down (virtually) with Cam from Craft & Tailored to discuss everything from buying and selling vintage watches, to the Paul Newman Daytona, to the Cartier Crash!
The beautiful thing about the jobs the both Christian and Cam have is that there is endless opportunity to develop their own personal taste just by virtue of the sheer number of fascinating and incredible watches they get to lay their hands on every day. One such opportunity is the Cartier Crash watch, a piece born out of a car crash in which a woman's watch was essentially mangled by the impact of the accident. She sent it back to Cartier, who took a mold of the watch and produced a small number of watches in its likeness. Since then, the watch has remained a limited production model, with small bouts of 450 in 1991 and 60 in 2004, for example, being released. Whether the story behind it is ultimately true is up for debate, but there's no denying how utterly stunning the watch is.
Now onto Paul Newman Daytonas. These are something of a specialty for Cam, and he's had experience with plenty of them over the years. The market right now, even after the seemingly pinnacle sale of Paul Newman's personal Newman Daytona, is still very strong. And it's easy to see why. There's two basic dial options -- exotic and non-exotic -- which sets it apart from the bevy of dial and bezel distinctions seen in other Rolex models (like the Submariner), and it makes it something a bit easier to understand, as a result. There's variations within, of course, but nothing compared to the depth of dial variants of the 5513.
