What is thundersnow?

What is the phenomenon known as thundersnow and how is it caused? Weather expert Paul Knightley from Meteogroup explains.

"Thundersnow is simply the name given to a thunderstorm when the precipitation coming out of it is snow rather than rain," says forecast manager Mr Knightley.

The result is heavy downpours of snow, with thunder and lightning.

Thunder-snowstorms are quieter than regular thunderstorms as the noise is muffled by the snow. The lightning may also appear brighter, as the light reflects off the snowflakes.
