Gastritis: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment
Gastritis is defined as the inflammation of the gastric or stomach mucous which is a common gastrointestinal problem. It may be acute lasting from several hours to a few days or it can be chronic resulting from repeated exposure to irritating agents.
Acute gastritis is often caused by dietary indiscretion. A person eats a food that is irritating, highly seasoned or contaminated food. Other causes include overuse of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs), excessive alcohol intake, bile reflux and radiation therapy.
Chronic gastritis, on the other hand, is a prolonged inflammation of the stomach that may be caused either by benign or malignant ulcers of the stomach or by bacteria such as Helicobacter pylori. It may also be associated with autoimmune diseases such as pernicious anaemia, dietary factors such as caffeine, the overuse of NSAIDs or bisphosphonates, alcohol, smoking or chronic reflux of pancreatic secretions and bile into the stomach.
But what causes gastritis? One of the main causes of gastritis is unhealthy diet. Excessive alcoholuse, chronic vomiting and use of anti-inflammatory drugs also results in gastritis. Bile reflux, bacterial or viral infections and inflammation of the stomach lining are other reasons for gastritis disorder.
So what can you do to prevent gastritis? As I mentioned earlier, one of the major reasons of gastritis is unhealthy diet. Hence, if you want to get rid of it, you have to make a big changes on your diet.
First off, start by eating healthy fruits and vegetables that are high in fiber such as bananas, orange, strawberry, apple, raspberries and so on. Secondly, you can go for garlic extract supplements. Some research suggests that consuming garlic extract can help reduce the symptoms of gastritis.
another remedy for gastritis would be consuming probiotics. Probiotics improves your digestive health and promote growth of good bacteria that prevents chronic gastritis. Foods like yogurt, kimchi, kefir, sauerkraut, contain probiotics.
Fourthly, we have green tea. A study showed that drinking green tea with manuka honey once a week significantly reduced the prevalence of H.pylori in the digestive tract.
Lastly, we have essential oil. Essential oils, such as lemongrass and lemon verbena, were found to help increase resistance to H. pylori in laboratory tests. Other oils that can have a positive effect on the digestive system include peppermint, ginger, and clove.
