Project Apollo NASSP 8.0 Alpha - Apollo 15 Landing at Hadley-Apennine
Project Apollo - NASSP (also known as NASSP or NCPP) is an add-on for the Orbiter space flight simulator. Project Apollo simulates the Apollo missions to Earth orbit and the Moon, and is slowly expanding to simulate planned post-Apollo missions that never flew. Project Apollo features a near-full implementation of the control panels in the Command Module and Lunar Module, and an increasingly accurate simulation of the internal systems (e.g. electrical distribution, fuel cells). Also the Virtual AGC software is supported, which allows you to run precisely the same on-board guidance software as used by the real Apollo Guidance Computer.
This video shows the Apollo 15 Lunar Landing, from Powered Descent Initation (PDI) to touchdown, using the Virtual AGC emulator which is running Luminary210, the AGC version flown on Apollo 15. Luminary210 uses a terrain model to translate landing radar measurements into meaningful state vector updates for the LGC. This terrain model is necessary for a successful landing at the Hadley plain, just behind the Mons Hadley massif, with the LM flying directly over the 11,000 feet high Mons Hadley Delta just minutes before the landing.
The landing phase is flown with Program 66 in the computer assisted ROD mode. The Rate-of-Descent (ROD) functionality allows the astronaut to control the descent rate by using a switch. The computer controls the DPS thrust to achieve the desired descent rate. The attitude is controlled with the joystick; without any joystick inputs the computer commands attitude hold. All actual lunar landings were flown in this computer-assisted landing mode. Fully automatic and fully manual landing modes are also possible.
The video was recorded with the Orbiter 2016 version of NASSP, which is still very early in development. NASSP 7.0 for Orbiter 2010 has finally been released last month, so work on the Orbiter 2016 version is now the primary task.
