Therapist Reacts to Adolescence, Episode 3

In this video, I offer my reflections on Episode 3 of Adolescence, a series that continues to both challenge and move me. As a psychologist, I’ve spent decades working with people who are hurting — people who are trying to find their way back to themselves. But adolescence? It’s its own wilderness. This episode, in particular, sheds light on the razor-thin edge between vulnerability and volatility in a young teenage boy, Jamie, and the professional tasked with assessing him.

Note: This video assumes you’ve watched at least through Episode 3. If not, there will be spoilers — and the reflections may not land the same way.

I talk through the tension between them, the subtle moments where power shifts, the real impact of gender dynamics, and the psychologist's struggle to hold her professional stance while being deeply affected on a human level. I also explore what happens when the cognitive approach falls short, when abstraction meets raw emotion, and when a child’s shame, longing, and rage erupt in real-time.

This isn’t a breakdown of plot points, it’s a deeper look into what’s underneath: the nervous system, the social forces, the hidden longings, and the impossible questions that professionals (and parents) have to face when a child says: “Did I scare you?”

Let me know in the comments: What stood out to you? What did you feel in your own body as you watched?
