Kidney to Share
There are more than 90,000 people on the kidney transplant list in the United States. Every day, 13 of them die waiting for a call. We need more living organ donors to help save these lives.
Martha Gershun and her co-author, Dr. John Lantos, discuss the organ donation process and the larger context of kidney transplantation and explore the ethical controversies surrounding living donors in a discussion of their new book Kidney to Share.
Kidney to Share tells the story of Gershun’s decision to donate a kidney to a stranger and provides an account of organ donation that is both personal and analytical, pulling back the curtain to offer readers a more transparent view of the fascinating world of organ donation.
Lantos is director of the Bioethics Center at Children's Mercy Hospital and a pediatrics professor at the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Medicine. The discussion is moderated by Dr. Terry Rosell, director of the ethics consultation service for the University of Kansas Health System and the Rosemary Flanigan Chair at the Center for Practical Bioethics.
