In the latest annual NBA General Managers’ survey conducted by NBA.com, front office executives were highly keen on Luka Doncic. When asked what player they would pick to start a franchise, 43% of GMs went with him. Luka was tied with Giannis Antetokounmpo, who received another 43% of the votes. The difference is that Doncic is just 21 years old and entering his third season in the NBA while Antetokounmpo is a back-to-back league MVP and reigning Defensive Player of the Year; that’s how highly the Mavericks’ Wonder Boy is regarded by people around the league.

Now, we all know the Los Angeles Clippers blew a 3 to 1 lead in the second round of the 2020 playoffs after beating Doncic and the Mavericks in the first round, but the Clips still had arguably the most talented roster from top to bottom in the entire NBA. Not to discredit what Dallas built in the entire season, but it was impressive to see how much fight they gave to one of the Clippers, who were the 2020 championship favorites, in the first round.

In Game 1, the Mavericks were leading 71 – 66 approximately three minutes into the third quarter. Luka was called for grabbing the ball, after which Marcus Morris attempted to swat it awy from his hands, getting in Doncic’s face. Teammate Kristaps Porzingis took exception to it and tied to back Morris away, with Morris responding with a slight push. Both players were hit with technical fouls, this being Porzingis’ second, which got him ejected. The Latvian unicorn had been a big part of the Mavs’ success in Game 1, and many people believe that had it not been for his ejection, Dallas would’ve hung on to win that one, as the Mavs did win Game 2.

Then in Game 4, Luka Doncic scored that game-winning step back three in overtime that the series 2 – 2. It was impressive considering the team played without Porzingis, who sat out with right knee soreness. Eventually, Porzingis would never return to the series, as his knee issue ended up being more serious than initially thought, and the Mavs lost the last two games of the series despite Luka’s heroics. The series didn’t go to waste, however, as Dallas proved they could hang with the best of the best. Also, we witnessed the most impressive NBA playoffs debut in the history of the league with Doncic averaging 31 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists while shooting 50% from the field and 36% from three.

This is how the NBA realized this guy was for real. It’s one thing to post nice stats on a league-high usage rate; but it’s an entire different feat to be as outstanding as Luka was in his playoff debut against elite competition. And even though it has been a really fun watch for us fans, the Mavericks’ ascension should be really scary for the rest of the NBA’s franchises, especially those in the Western Conference. And as if having a really dangerous core wasn’t already scary enough, Dallas also made some interesting moves in the past two months.

The Mavs had a rather quiet, yet very impactful 2020 offseason. After having far and away the best offense in the entire NBA but finishing 18th in Team Defensive Rating, allowing 111.7 points per 100 possessions, the front office’s plans for the offseason were clear: acquire talent that could give the Mavs a good boost defensively without sacrificing much of their offense. And judging by their moves, we could safely say they accomplished just that.
