Filming for Wednesday took place between September 2021 and March 2022 predominantly in the southern Carpathian town of Busteni, Romania. The setting for the fictional Nevermore Academy was Cantacuzino Castle. The locations used were the Politehnica University of Bucharest, the Bucharest Botanical Garden, and the Olga Greceanu Mansion in Dambovita County.
Other settings including the entire town of Jericho were recreated at Bucharest Film Studios in Romania.
The brief for the creature work was that everything had to be photo-real, but just slightly off, subtly anthropomorphized. If they modeled something that was a bit too realistic, Tim would make an adjustment or two to make it become part of the Burton universe.
Rocket Science VFX handled the large volume of 2-and-a-half-dimensional Thing clean-ups and patches. And MARZ vfx handled the full 3D Thing asset and animation.
MPC did the more complex 3D work including hero creature work, Hyde and the Werewolf, and Nevermore Academy.
For Thing, The Effects team actually had to have a 4 or 5 different size and shape stumps to use for each scene depending on the angle the actor's arm would have to be at.
Each prosthetic change took nearly three hours.
This dramatic close-up of Crackstone wasn't actually planned for, so they lacked a lot of the elements they needed.
In the end, they reconstructed the plate and the actor using 2.5D high-rez DMPs and projections onto a match-moved 3D scan.
Then added a 3D smoke simulation and used deep compositing in Nuke. This allowed the now 3D Crackstone to exist inside the 3D smoke sim.
Even though they always tried to position the actor playing Thing in a way as to stop him from casting shadows. In some shots, it was unavoidable so they had to remove the shadow in post.
And here comes the invisible effect we mentioned earlier, because of the blue suit, This water bottle had to be completely replaced, adding the bubbling effect, and the reflection of Thing and everything else within the room.
