JRBP Virtual Member Event: The Decline of the Hellbenders

Missouri State University has a long-standing history of research on hellbenders, the second-largest salamanders in the world, including the surveys in the late 1990s that first documented the population declines of this charismatic species. Since then, both subspecies of hellbenders in Missouri have been listed as federally endangered. Dr. Alicia Mathis’ lab group at MSU has worked with the Missouri Department of Conservation, the US Fish & Wildlife Service, and the St. Louis Zoo to study several possible contributors to the decline, from reproduction to introduced predators to electrofishing. These data have contributed to the development of interventions that offer hope for this species in Missouri.
