Tennis: Alex Eala, Coco Gauff sweep Italian pair, advance to q'finals in Rome
Filipina tennis star Alex Eala and Grand Slam champion Coco Gauff marched to the quarterfinals of the 2025 Italian Open women's doubles in impressive fashion, Tuesday.
The first-time pair swept the Italian tandem of Tyra Grant and Lisa Pigato, 6-2, 6-3, in their round-of-16 match in Rome.
After cruising to victory in the opening set, Eala and Gauff were pushed by Grant and Pigato in the second, with the Italians threatening to tie the count in the eighth game after a slice by Grant forced a deuce point.
But Pigato sent a forehand long in the next rally to give Eala and Gauff a 5-3 lead, and Gauff held her serve in the next game to wrap up the victory. They clinched the win on their first match point, off a smartly-placed shot by Eala at the net.
Up next for Gauff and Eala is the formidable pair of Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini in the last eight.
Errani and Paolini are the defending champions, though they were pushed to three sets by the tandem of Leylah Fernandez and Yulia Putintseva in their own round-of-16 assignment before advancing.

Filipina tennis star Alex Eala is set to share the court with a Grand Slam champion anew -- but this time, they will be on the same side.
Eala will play doubles with former US Open champion and world No. 3 Coco Gauff of the United States in the Italian Open, her manager confirmed to ABS-CBN News early Thursday morning, Manila time.
They will be up against Alexandra Panova of Russia and Fanny Stollár of Hungary in the round-of-32.
It's another milestone for the 19-year-old Eala, whose profile has grown steadily since her Cinderella run to the semifinals of the Miami Open in late March. She is currently ranked 70th by the WTA.
She begins her singles campaign in Rome against Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk on Thursday morning.
Eala has had great success in doubles at the juniors level, having won the 2020 Australian Open and the 2021 French Open.
The 21-year-old Gauff is a former world No. 1 in doubles and won the 2024 French Open with Kateřina Siniaková of the Czech Republic.
Gauff is seeded fourth in the singles draw of the Italian Open and received a bye to the second round, where she will play Canada's Victoria Mboko.
