Thunderstorm near Montreal - July 6th, 2021

****I STRONGLY RECOMMEND USING EARPHONES/HEADPHONES (BASS AMPLIFIED) TO HEAR THE MORE NATURAL SOUND OF THE RAIN****
A video compilation of a heavy rainfall that affected the NW portion of the West Island during the late-afternoon. A thunderstorm was then briefly observed in my sub-area, over South Vaudreuil, following an initial thunderstorm over Salaberry-de-Valleyfield. A forceful thunder was later observed in association with a strike that originated in Vaudreuil (not captured), around 6:30 p.m. EDT.

Thunderstorms/heavy convective rains developed in response to a cold front. Within the pre-frontal environment were conditions characterized by moderate instability that resulted from sufficient solar heating (after a largely cloudy morning to early-afternoon) and very high humidity. The lack of morning solar heating and weak mid-level cooling did limit particularly high instability, but moderate standards were still achieved in light of a moisture-rich surface and afternoon sunlight that broke through. Shearing fields were also modest, and so thunderstorms were generally briefly-sustained and somewhat slow-moving. Due to limited lift, however, thunderstorms remained sparsely-distributed. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch and eventually briefly a Severe Thunderstorm Warning were eventually released for this general area, including for the island.

The footage mostly highlights the heavy rainfall during the late-afternoon, as well as photos of the afternoon convection.

Footage was taken in SW Pierrefonds, located in Montreal’s West Island. Radar imagery is courtesy of NOAA.
