Pistachio: Growing pistachio trees and harvesting your crop in Melbourne

How do you know when your pistachio nut crop is ripe, ready and delicious to eat? Karen shows us her ripe pistachio nuts and shows how to pick ripe nuts. The pistachio trees grow on the nature strip garden in Melbourne. The trees are planted in an exposed, windy and hot position and they are thriving as a productive street tree. Both a male and female tree are needed for cross pollination to produce a crop, Karen has planted the male and female trees close together which can help restrict vigour, she also prunes the trees to size.

Note: If you grow a tree from seed, it would take around 10 years before it flowers, which will allow us to determine the sex of the tree. The male tree has pollen on the flowers. The grafted trees will start to produce nuts before a seedling tree. My trees are grafted and you can choose the sex male/female when you purchase trees from the nursery.

Where can I get a pistachio tree?
Your local reputable nursery such as Bulleen Art & Garden Centre, Yalca Fruit Trees or CERES nursery in Victoria Australia. They may need to order in the male and female trees for you.
