Starting August 1, 2026, purchasing certain semi-automatic firearms in Colorado is changing. Senate Bill 25-003 introduces a new "Firearms Safety Course Eligibility Card" requirement for specified semi-automatic rifles, shotguns with detachable magazines, and gas-operated semi-automatic handguns. 

What you need to know:

✅ The Card: You must apply for an eligibility card through your local Sheriff’s office, which includes a background check.

✅ The Training: You must complete an in-person, state-approved safety course (4 hours if you have Hunter Ed, 12 hours if not).

✅ The Exam: A final exam and practical skills test with a minimum score of 90% is required.

✅ The Validity: Once issued, the card is valid for five years. 

This law does not affect firearms you already own or prohibit their use. It applies strictly to new purchases and transfers after August 1, 2026.
