Amtrak Three Rivers in HO Scale (With Private Car)
My latest HO modeling endeavor: Amtrak's Three Rivers (Alternative titles include "The Amtrak Freight Train, Poser Broadway Limited, Poseway Limited, and Half-Baked Broadway). For those that aren't aware, this was one of the Amtrak trains that used to stop in Fostoria, Ohio.
The train was inaugurated 1995 shortly after Amtrak discontinued the Broadway Limited after almost a century in service. The main focus of this train was for Amtrak to expand it's mail and express freight operations it was pursuing at the time. While most Amtrak trains carried a reasonable number of coaches, diners, cafe-lounges and sleepers, the Three Rivers' only passenger accommodations were usually three coaches and an Amcafe car, although the train started carrying a single sleeping car a short while later. This New York - Chicago train would itself be discontinued only ten years later after Amtrak lost it's mail contract in 2005.
Right now, the train consists of 3 Athearn Blue Box genesis locomotives (two powered, one dummy), 15 Material handling cars, and five passenger cars (and in this case, one private car tacked on the end). I'd like to get some roadrailers in the future to to tack on the end of this train, but the only ones I know of are the roadrailers made by Bowser models. The rail mates needed for them to actually couple up to any locomotive are sold separately, and I believe are kits, so I'll need to figure that part out. In the meantime, it's MHC galore. The train usually carried a 10-6 heritage fleet sleeper in real life, later upgraded to a viewliner. Most of the viewliners I've seen in HO scale are ungodly expensive, so I went for the next best thing: A heritage fleet slumbercoach in phase IV paint (They did not last into the phase IV era). Quite, honestly, I like it better, and it will be staying in the Three Rivers consist.
