Victorian investors ‘fleeing’ market after being treated like a government ‘piggy bank’

Victorian Shadow Housing Affordability Minister Evan Mulholland warns about one in four property investors are “fleeing” the state’s market because it is no longer a “certain investment”.

The Victorian government is pushing to expand the existing vacant residential land tax to include regional Victoria.

Under the plan, the new tax would be expanded to homes empty for at least six months a year in Victoria's regions.

Labor's bill stalled in the upper house after the Greens withheld support, instead pushing for a rent freeze.

“You have got mum and dad investors being treated like a piggy bank for the government to pinch from,” Mr Mulholland told Sky News contributor Steve Price.

“These are people on average on about $100,000 a year that have made that choice to invest for their retirement, that have made that investment decision and the government is coming after them because they are broke.”
