ALIEN 3: The sequel that Hollywood hid for years

Alien 3 is one of the most discussed movies of the saga. It is also the one with more problems during production, with creative teams coming and going. But there was a director that proposed a point of view so original as it was miscomprehended.

Alien is a science-fiction horror/action media franchise centered on the film series which depicts warrant officer Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and her battles with an extraterrestrial lifeform, commonly referred to as "the Alien" or Xenomorph. Produced and distributed by 20th Century Studios, the series began with Alien (1979), directed by Ridley Scott, and was followed by three sequels: Aliens (1986), directed by James Cameron; Alien 3 (1992), directed by David Fincher, and Alien Resurrection (1997), directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Scott also directed a prequel series, composed of Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017), which follows the exploits of the David 8 android and the creators of the eponymous creatures referred to as the "Engineers".

In 1990, Vincent Ward wrote the story for Alien 3, a proposed sequel to the film Aliens; he was the fourth of ten different writers to tackle the Alien 3 project. Much of the plot and several of the characters from Ward's script, were later fused with the prison setting from David Twohy's proposed script to form the basis of Alien 3 as it was ultimately made. Ward received a ‘story by’ credit on the final film. The heart of his story, known as ‘the monks in space’ version, was however not captured in the final film and has since been recognised by the London Times Online, who in 2008 gave it the top spot on their list of 'greatest sci-fi movies never made’.
