Repertoire: The IDEAL Romantic String Quartets

This is a chat for beginners looking to explore the universe of romantic chamber music. After Beethoven, there are five composers and nineteen works that form the core of the nineteenth-century string quartet literature:
Schubert: Quartets No. 12-15
Mendelssohn: Quartets Nos. 1-6
Brahms: Quartets Nos. 1-3
Smetana: Quartets Nos. 1 & 2
Dvořák: Quartets Nos. 10, 12-14
Many other composers wrote string quartets, some of them excellent, but if you get these you will have the essentials well in hand. I also recommend specific performances during the chat, but there are so many fine quartets out there playing this music that this is less important, in my opinion, than simply getting to know the works themselves. Start here, and let your own preferences and inclinations guide you on any further explorations.
