ICING, Most Complicated Flight of 2016 - Flight VLOG #5

My 10-hour flight home this past Thanksgiving was one of the most diverse I’ve ever made. I departed a towered field during the day in clear skies and warm temperatures; flew over snow capped mountains, through clouds, rain, and (inadvertently) icing conditions; shot two instrument approaches, including one at 2,000+ ft/min; and ended at an uncontrolled field in freezing temperatures at night.

See what it’s like to manage weather information and decision making in some pretty complex weather environments, shoot a couple fun approaches (RNAV Runway 18 approach at KRZL, RNAV Runway 31 at KABR (instead of the ILS to ensure a reliable glideslope on an unusual approach)), and cover 1300nm in one day in a Bonanza. Altogether it was a pretty wild and occasionally stressful ride.
