Poudre Learning Center Riparian Restoration | Weld County, CO

WaterVation, in partnership with AloTerra Restoration and LVBrown Studios was hired by the Poudre Learning Center to develop 60% restoration plans for their Hall 133 Parcel, including 3,200 feet of river restoration. The Hall 133 parcel had previously been farmed and served as an active gravel mine. The projects goal is to create a comprehensive plan and design for reclaiming, restoring, and enhancing stream and riparian function, transitional habitat, and reducing watershed fragmentation.

For this project WaterVation is the lead stream restoration engineering focused on the riverine function and habitat. WaterVation provided a comprehensive site assessment using UAV technology for a point cloud surface developed from photogrammetry and current site photography from an orthomosaic. WaterVation provided a detailed geomorphic stream survey of cross-sections and sediment samples for the project reach and a reference reach.

The project team is using the Colorado Stream Quantification Tool to determine existing impairments and to score potential uplift based on the 60% design plans. The project design is focused on providing floodplain connectivity, improving bedform diversity, and reducing entrenchment and bank armoring. The goal for the project is to create a sustainable naturalized prairie stream using onsite materials and appropriate geomorphic parameters for the system.

WaterVation is providing geomorphic assessment, 2D hydraulic modeling, sediment transport modeling, and stream restoration design services for this project. The project is currently in the design phase.
