Operation Snatch: The Forced Removal of Doukhobor Children (1953–1959)

Imagine being a child, suddenly torn from your family in the middle of the night, and sent to a place that felt more like a prison than a school. This was the reality for over 200 children in British Columbia during the 1950s.

The Doukhobors, a group of Russian Christian pacifists, had long been in conflict with the Canadian government. In the 1950s, a radical faction known as the Sons of Freedom began protesting against government policies, including mandatory public schooling. Their protests were often dramatic, involving nudity and arson, which drew significant attention.

In response, the British Columbia government launched "Operation Snatch" between 1953 and 1959. Under this operation, authorities forcibly removed children aged 7 to 15 from their homes, often in the dead of night. These children were then placed in a former tuberculosis sanatorium in New Denver, a small village in the West Kootenay region. The conditions were harsh: the children were forbidden from speaking their native Russian and were punished for using it. They were also separated from their families, with parents allowed only brief, supervised visits.

The government's goal was clear: to assimilate these children into mainstream Canadian society by eradicating their cultural and religious practices. However, the operation faced significant criticism. Decades later, the children, now adults, sought justice for their traumatic experiences. In 1999, a report by the British Columbia Ombudsman acknowledged the wrongful removal and confinement of these children. In 2024, the provincial government issued a formal apology and began providing compensation to the survivors, recognizing the lasting impact of this dark chapter in Canadian history.
