2000 Suburban Instrument Cluster Fix
We had a bad ground. Initually we check for voltages, with the key on and using A6 as the ground and found we did have voltages to many of the other pins, like A2, A3, A4. So we thought it must be the cluster itself.
All of the solder joints looked good. At this point the cluster worked intermittantly. So we tried cleaning and reconnecting every ground connection we could find to the motor and frame. Still not working all the time.
We next tried a new ignition switch which comes with it's own harness and still no cluster. Someone said, it is probably your ignition switch, because It and the key controls every electrical circuit and there is a harness that comes with it. By this time, the cluster was no longer intermitant. Nothing worked on the instrument cluster anymore except the back light.
We swapped clusters from my 2001 silverado to his 2000 Suburban and my good working cluster did not work in his Suburban, but his non-working cluster did work in my Silverado.
We decided there is nothing wrong with his cluster, but there is something else wrong.
We found out there is another ground wire on the harness at A8, which is black and white. We used a meter to check A2, A3, A4 with A8 as the ground and sure enough did not have proper voltage.
I could not trace A8 ground wire, so I decided to just find a good ground somewhere in the dash area. I did find a good ground in the dash, so I ran a wire from the good ground to A8 and it fixed the cluster. Prior to not having a good ground at A8, we no longer had speedometer, tach, no gauges, no PRNDL, no odometer. but we did have back lighting, probably uses A6 as the ground.
Hopefully this video will help someone with a similar problem. My son gave up, but I am stubborn and knew we were finally getting close to fixing the problem.Good Luck.
