Kirk Douglas was already a young dad to Michael when he met publicist Anne Buydens in Paris and married her in 1954. Anne became the steady stepmom in a house that could’ve been swallowed by fame, and the family soon grew with sons Peter and Eric. Michael has said Anne brought warmth and structure, keeping family dinners sacred. Even when Kirk’s fame exploded, she tried to keep the kids away from Hollywood parties and pushed for a normal life. She stood by Kirk after his 1996 stroke and helped steer their giving through the Douglas Foundation. Michael later called her the family’s matriarch until her death in 2021.
