We took a trip down to the infamous Maeklong Railway Market located less than an hour outside of Bangkok in Samut Songkhram...

The story goes that when the train line was built, the market that had been there before refused to move and instead kept their stalls open.

When the train goes through the market (8 or so times a day), the vendors move their goods off the tracks as well as pull back their sun-shielding parasols.

That's why the locals colloquially call the Mae Klong market "Rom hoob market," literally the "Closing umbrella market."
