Fans expected the next great fantasy franchise. The 2006 film cost $100 million to make and was destroyed by critics and fans. It made only $250 million and was never followed up. The Inheritance Cycle — 4 books — was abandoned by Hollywood. If Fox had taken the time Peter Jackson took with LOTR, fantasy cinema might have had a real competitor. The wrong adaptation can kill an empire before it starts.
