Richard Burton’s tribute to Frank Sinatra December 8, 1983

Richard Burton's speech evoked Sinatra's tears. The Welshman said he spoke not in tribute to Sinatra but as a friend, especially on the subject Sinatra least likes to hear, his charitable good works.

'Frank is a giant,' Burton said. 'Among the givers of the world, you stand tallest. He has more than paid rent for the space he occupies on this planet, forged as he is from legendary loyalty and compassion carefully hidden ... Other than himself there is no one who knows of the magnitude of his generosity.'

Burton added that he, Burton, represented grateful multitudes who have opened 'unexpected envelopes ... special delivering answers to their prayers ... those awakened by late night phone calls which remedied their problems only on condition they share your covenant of secrecy...'
