USA: REACTION TO THE ARREST OF TIMOTHY MCVEIGH
(22 Apr 1995) Fire fighters who've spent the last three days rescuing survivors and digging for bodies in the rubble of the federal building in Oklahoma City voiced their relief that a suspect had been arrested.
The crowds booed and jeered as the 26-year-old former soldier was led from the Perry, Oklahoma, courthouse.
Screams of "baby killer" rang out as Timothy McVeigh was escorted out of town by FBI agents.
Fire fighters in Oklahoma City reacted to the arrest which came after just 48 hours and a promise by President Bill Clinton to seek revenge on the killers.
SOUNDBITES:
"Actually I probably shouldn't say that on TV because I'm a strong proponent I guess of instant capital punishment. So, I don't think they should even go to trial."
"It's kind of eerie. I don't know, I mean I haven't really had time to think about it. Seeing this down here brings it all to home - you know what I mean? I don't know. It's kind of scary - scary that somebody could do that to other human beings. That's kind of... that's what scares me."
"When you have rumours going around, rumours are - like with anything - you have to weed it out and find which is which and what's what and that's what the investigative team has done so far. And they're... they're doing real good at finding out if that's the truth or if it's someone here close to town, which I doubt."
"They've got to be hung. That's my opinion. 'Cos (Because) a lot of women and children got killed."
As the search of the remains continues, the death toll creeps up. It has now reached 78.
The state's governor expressed his disgust at the attack.
SOUNDBITE:
"The motive, to me, of course is irrelevant. No political motive is worth the life of a child or an innocent human being. So this appears to be a domestic terrorist act. But it still is a terrorist act. Innocent human beings were savaged and broken and what occurred here was unforgivable. It was a horrible, uncivilised beastly thing to do. We are unforgiving."

Whilst the investigation appears to be going at full speed, it may take many years for the nation to come to terms with the events of the last week.
