For Gucci’s Gucci Fest, Priya collaborated with film director Samona Olanipekin to create Ahluwalia’s first short film Joy. A story that is part documentary, part fly on the wall and part fashion film.

A kaleidoscopic love story, Joy celebrates the ‘everyday beauty and strength of the Black existence’ and features community leaders, matriarchs, poets, athletes and political activists. The film is a snapshot of Black liberation through Afro-Caribbean rituals, something of importance to both Ahluwalia and Olanipekun who both have Nigerian heritage.

The Ahluwalia collection showcased in Joy was specially designed with each cast member in mind. Garments were delicately customised with graphics inspired by sentimental things from the casts’ lives, such as an old family photo being processed into a heat transfer vinyl and applied to a patchwork waistcoat.

Vibrancy and richness of Black culture is shown through every aspect of the film. The clothes, the sounds, the stories, the characters, the music, the camera work, the colours and the emotion.
