P0116 Jeep Grand Cherokee - Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Circuit Performance
P0116 (Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Circuit Performance) on a Jeep Grand Cherokee? This video walks through the complete 9-step factory diagnostic procedure with the wiring diagram and connector views - no guesswork, no parts cannon.
When monitored: Engine off time is greater than 480 minutes. Ambient temperature is greater than 4 deg C (38 deg F).
Set condition: After a calibrated amount of cool down time the PCM compares the ECT Sensor, IAT Sensor, and the Ambient Air Temp Sensor values. If the ECT Sensor value is not within 10 deg C of the other two temperature sensors. Two Trip Fault. Three good trips to turn off the MIL. (5.7L ETC lamp will illuminate with the MIL.).
In this video:
1. Active DTC
2. (K2) ECT Signal Circuit Shorted To Battery Voltage
3. ECT Sensor Voltage Above 4.6 Volts
4. ECT Sensor
5. (K2) ECT Signal Circuit Open
6. (K900) Sensor Ground Circuit Open
7. (K2) ECT Signal Circuit Shorted To Ground
8. (K2) ECT Signal Circuit Shorted To The (K900) Sensor Ground Circuit
9. PCM
Possible causes covered: (K2) ECT Signal Circuit Shorted To Battery Voltage; (K2) ECT Signal Circuit Open; (K900) Sensor Ground Circuit Open; (K2) ECT Signal Circuit Shorted To Ground; (K2) ECT Signal Circuit Shorted To The (K900) Sensor Ground; ECT Sensor; PCM.
Applies to the Jeep Grand Cherokee third generation (WK, 2005-2010) with the 3.7L V6, 4.7L V8 and 5.7L HEMI V8 (and SRT-8 6.1L). Much of the diagnostic logic is shared with the related Jeep Commander (XK) of the same era.
This is general information for educational purposes - always confirm against the service information for your exact vehicle.
